I had an Apex AD-500W imported into Australia for my review and hacking purposes. Here in Australia we operate on 240V while the 500W is designed for 120V. I could have run the player though a 240V-120V Step-Down transformer but I thought it would be better if I modified the power supply to work on 240V directly. I did it, and here is how you can do it.

I must stress again that the modification involves working with mains rated parts and you could get a nasty shock from the power supply if you are not careful. Therefore if you are in any doubts leave the modification to someone who knows what they are doing.

So what does the modification involve? Simply it is replacing resistor R10 from 100K to 220K. Be sure to use a 1-Watt resistor.

And that's it!!! All the other parts are rated for this type of voltage. I tested the DVD player for 24 hours with my variable transformer wound all the way up to 265V and the power supply worked no problem.

So for anyone wanting to import a 500W into a 220V-250V location it is possible to easily modify the power supply to run on those voltages.
