DAEWOO DVD-8000F

IMPORTANT: This page is for the Daewoo DVD-8000F ONLY.
It is
NOT for the other Daewoo "8000" models, such as the DVD-8000K and DVD-8000N. DO NOT attempt to use the firmware
available on this page on any player
except for the Daewoo DVD-8000F!

The Daewoo DVD-8000F can be made REGION-FREE by a firmware (software) upgrade.

It is unknown whether this upgrade also disables Macrovision (it probably does not.)

1. Download the firmware upgrade HERE.
Unzip all 3 files (BANK30.ROM, APASSWD, TEST20MB.TXT)

2. Burn BANK30.ROM, APASSWD, and TEST20MB.TXT to a blank CD-R/CD-RW.
("TEST20MB.TXT" helps the player find the .ROM file more easily; it has no other function.)
Be sure to apply these specifications before burning the disc:
Data CD, ISO9660, Mode 1, "Close"/"Finalize" disc session.

(If you need help with burning the disc, you might want to check out this excellent article put together by the guys at Area 450. The article references Sampo firmware, but the burning specifications are the same.)

After the disc is burned, view the contents of the disc in Windows Explorer/My Computer/whatever.

Right-click on the BANK30.ROM file that's burned on the disc and select "Properties" (or do whatever is necessary to view the Properties.)
Make sure that the file size is EXACTLY
524,288 bytes.
If the file size is NOT 524,288 bytes, DO NOT CONTINUE!

Now, look at the APASSWD file.
Make sure that there is no file extension (e.g. "APASSWD.TXT.")
The file MUST be called simply "APASSWD" with NO file extension!
Right-click on APASSWD and, as you did with the BANK30.ROM file, view the Properties
of the file.
Make sure that the file size is EXACTLY
20 bytes.
If the file size is NOT 20 bytes, DO NOT CONTINUE!

3. Read the disclaimer:

DISCLAIMER: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I DO NOT OWN A DAEWOO DVD-8000F PLAYER SO I CANNOT TRY THIS CDR UPGRADE MYSELF. I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MAY RESULT TO YOUR PLAYER. PERFORMING THE PROCEDURE DESCRIBED HERE WILL LIKELY VOID THE WARRANTY OF YOUR DVD-8000F!

IN ADDITION: The original (Region 2?) firmware is NOT available for this player. Once you apply the region-free firmware upgrade, you will NOT be able to return to the original firmware.

4. Eject the disc tray on the DVD player.

5. Put the CD-R/CD-RW, data side down, on the tray.

6. Close the disc tray.

7. The upgrade process will now begin. Within a few seconds,
you should see the words "BANK30.ROM". This means that the player
is in the process of upgrading.

Wait at least 5 minutes.

After the upgrade is complete, you will likely
see only the word "ROM" on your screen. Or, the screen may
have gone blank.

8. Turn OFF the POWER on the front of the player (NOT the remote control). Wait 10 seconds, and then turn ON the power on the front of the player (NOT the remote control). Eject the disc immediately. HOWEVER...if you wait too long, the upgrade process will repeat - so if this is the case, DO NOT EJECT THE DISC! Be patient and repeat the steps above - it won't hurt your player if it is "reupgraded". BUT IF YOU EJECT THE DISC WHILE THE PLAYER IS BEING UPGRADED OR REUPGRADED,
YOU MAY RUIN THE PLAYER'S FIRMWARE CHIP!

9. Your player should now be region-free.
